Before 2020, more people left Lewisham to work than came into our town centres and high streets. Now Catford stands to be at the forefront of a radical new way of working as we root ourselves closer to home and explore more flexible ways to work and connect.
Community feedback gathered over the past four years shows that residents want to see a cultural revival in Catford; creating a town centre where people want to spend time and meet to socialise with friends and family instead of travelling to central London or other areas of the capitals. The vision for a vibrant town centre will retain Catford’s unique character whilst developing new and exciting opportunities for businesses and civic uses.
Catford Broadway, the historic market street, will be strengthened to support existing businesses and create an accessible shopping area. The area covering the Thomas Lane depot, the Thomas Lane car park and part of the Catford Shopping Centre, stretching all the way east to Rushey Green will be transformed into ‘The Yards’, a series of three flexible spaces with affordable workspace, new homes, small shops and retail kiosks.
Catford will remain the civic heart of the borough and reorganising council’s offices in the Old Town Hall and Civic Suite will provide an opportunity to create a new civic hub which celebrates the Grade II Listed Broadway Theatre and creates public space around this important heritage building.
New homes could be delivered along Rushey Green above the existing shops . The Framework Plan also looks at how new spaces for small businesses could be created as a quieter retreat from the high street.
