The Little Nan’s effect

A cultural revival is already underway in Catford. If you haven’t been yet, get yourself to this kitsch, theatrical café bar in the foyer space of the historic Broadway Theatre where cocktails are served in teacups with names inspired by Pat Butcher’s earrings.

Tristan Scutt opened Little Nan’s in Catford earlier this year as one of the first of the Council’s meanwhile use spaces and - along with other pubs, bars and restaurants - it is encouraging a wave of innovative food, film and art pop-ups in the town centre.

For those of us old enough to remember, Catford was once home to three cinemas and with the Catford Arts Trail, artists’ studios in the Old Town Hall, Catford Free Film Festival and the Catford beer festival, the town centre is rapidly reclaiming its title as the cultural hub of the borough of south east London.

We're asking people what they think about the town centre and we've heard:

#Catfordconversation“Pedestrianise it with cafes and outdoor seating.” (Broadway)“keep area affordable for small shops.” “Better market.” “Drunks.”

Tristan Scutt, owner of Little Nan's: "We opened up in Catford earlier on this year, and the love from the local community has been totally amazing. We have hosted many community events for the kids and the elderly which have been really popular and we will be hosting many more of these events whilst we are in SE6! Thank you Catford for welcoming us with open arms, Little Nan loves you all!"Theresa on the Catford Centre: “I would like the building to be changed to a shopping centre… where you can go in, and you can sit down and you can drink coffee, buy cakes and things to eat and relax a bit before you continue your journey.”Claire on priorities for Catford: “To really get a sense of community going and some nice places for people to go and to sit within a community.”

Michelle on Broadway: “we’d love a little Primark in Catford. And a little JD Sport – a little bit of everything in Catford, and there’s space for it here.”

What’s your favourite shop, restaurant, café or pub in the town centre? Tell us how you’d like to see Catford town centre in the future.
