News on Catford Town Centre

The Tail, a new live music venue, is set to open in Catford as Lewisham’s independent cinema, Catford Mews expands its existing site in Catford Shopping Centre.

With capacity for 300 people, the music venue will also be available for private hire for bands to warm up before shows, for comedy nights or as rehearsal space for local artists. The 4,000 sq ft space will be fully soundproofed and air conditioned with a new bar.

Perfectly timed to coincide with Lewisham’s Borough of Culture 2022, The Tail will open in Spring 2022 and help attract more people to the town centre from daytime through to evening. The new venue will provide a boost to the local economy and create up to 15 new jobs as Catford Mews seeks to double the number of people it employs.

Preston, the founder of the Really Local Group who brought Catford Mews to the town, says that the 300-capacity venue is ‘what south London is really missing’ and goes on to describe The Tail as ‘an opportunity for younger and amateur musicians of all shapes and sizes to come in and play.’

The Council is also announcing plans to improve the public space on Holbeach Road with new planting, seating and enabling works to allow pop-up events and street markets. Works to deliver this new public space will be complete next year, allowing music events at The Tail to make use of the outside area with rear doors opening directly onto this fully-pedestrianised stretch of Holbeach Road.

Another exciting update for creatives, especially those with children is that Mother House Studios will open their first ever studio on the second floor of the Mews this month. The Mother House Studios is the first and only Artist Studio model with integrated childcare, offering a working space, a dedicated and open plan laboratory for artists to work, and an interconnected space, dedicated to children who have the freedom to move between the two rooms.
